Merriam-Webster defines Alzheimer’s disease as: a degenerative brain disease of unknown cause that is the most common form of dementia, that usually starts in late middle age or in old age, that results in progressive memory loss, impaired thinking, disorientation and changes in personality and mood.
In reading this definition, likely someone you know, either diagnosed or undiagnosed, came to mind. In my case, my mind instantly shifted to my Mamaw who has been living with Alzheimer’s for the past two years. While this disease is certainly taking its toll, our family focuses on the power of being in the present. We can’t control this disease; however, we can carry on loving her, just as we always have, in that given moment, each and every day.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association website, more than six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and women account for nearly two-thirds of this number.
In an effort to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease, we’ve chosen to highlight the Alzheimer’s Association as they gear up for their annual fundraising campaign. Every fall, in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association holds the Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, which is the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease.
While there is no fee to register for a Walk, all participants are encouraged to raise critical funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support and advance research toward methods of prevention, treatment and, ultimately, a cure.
They have three opportunities to participate:
- Register for your local Walk
Find a Walk near you and sign up as a Team Captain, team member or individual. - Start fundraising and spread the word
They’ll provide tips and coaching every step of the way, including easy ways to raise funds online. - Join on Walk day
They’re safely hosting in-person events this fall but will also offer options to Walk from Home.
The goal of this event is to make a powerful impact to accelerate groundbreaking research and provide 24/7 support to more than six million people living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
