Bitcoinโ€™s Crazy Train

Originally Published: August 7, 2025

Bitcoin startedย as an obscure experiment.ย The polarizing digital assetย has barreled its way through bubbles,ย regulatory hurdles, and bouts of extreme volatility toย emergeย as a legit store of value.ย

Bitcoinย was onceย dismissed asย fad, Ponzi scheme, and a tool for speculators and criminals.ย

Itโ€™sย now sitting at the grown-upsโ€™ table of global finance.ย

The idea of a decentralized, unregulated currency with no intrinsic value sounded like financialย black magic.ย Fast forward to 2025, major asset managersย like Blackrock & J.P. Morganย areย on board.ย Sovereign wealth funds areย allocatingย to BTC, and the SEC has finally greenlit Bitcoin ETFs.ย Central banks hold or are considering holding BTC on their balance sheet.ย Companies are operating BTC Treasuries toย maintainย purchasingย power of their idle reserves.ย

How did Bitcoin go from being the punchline to a legitimate asset class worthy of institutionalย investors?ย ย

The answer is fiscal recklessness, perpetual governmentย deficient, and the debasement of paper (fiat) currency.ย

We highlight pivotal moments in BTCโ€™s history and why the crazy train could be in theย early stagesโ€ฆย

Rise of Bitcoin ETFs

The U.S.ย approved its first spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024,ย marking a turning point: 11 ETFs launched, including offerings from BlackRock, Fidelity, ARK21Shares, iShares, Bitwise, and others.ย

Retail investorsย couldย now click a few buttons via Schwab or Fidelity and buy BTC like they were buying Apple or Amazon. This opened a flood of liquidity into BTC; the equation was simple, fixed supply of Bitcoin, increased demand = price appreciation.ย

The result was the most successful exchange traded fund (ETF) launch in historyโ€ฆย

The above chart shows BTC ETF assets (ticker IBIT, orange) vs. other popular equity ETFs. VOO (S&P 500), IEFA (international stocks), IEMG (emerging markets) took ~5 years to reach $80 billion in assets under management.ย Bitcoin took about a year to reachย $80 billion.ย Some analysts expect IBIT to reachย $100 billionย by the end ofย 2025.ย

Bitcoinย Governmentย Reservesย

Onย March 6, 2025,ย President Trump signed an executive orderย establishingย aย U.S.ย Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR).ย The U.S. government holds an estimatedย 200,000+ BTCย ย

Fidelity Digital Assetsย projectsย central banks and sovereign wealth fundsย toย beginย establishingย strategic Bitcoin positions in 2025,ย furtheringย BTC adoption globally.ย

El Salvadorย was the earliest adopter of sovereign BTC holdings making the digital asset a legal tender.ย The country currently holds over 6,100 BTC, valued around $550โ€“600 million.ย

Indonesiaย isย discussingย whether BTC mining could serve as a national reserve strategy aligned with economic growth goals.ย If Indonesia has success mining and owning BTC, other Asian countries could follow.ย

Brazilย is set to hold a parliamentary hearing on Augustโ€ฏ20, 2025, where lawmakers will debate legislation proposing allocation of up toย 5% of national treasury assetsย into Bitcoin (~$15โ€ฏbillion based on Feb 2025 reserves).ย

Polandย viewsย Bitcoin as a diversification and innovation strategy.ย

Czech Republic isย reportedly evaluatingย up to 5% of national reserves in BTC.ย

Russia also received official proposals after government officials publicly praised BTCโ€™s role in reducing relianceย on the U.S. Dollar and the wildly fluctuations of the Ruble.ย

Japan, through its Government Pension Investment Fund, has expressed interest in exploring BTC allocation.ย

Smart People are Changing Their Tuneย

Being able to change oneโ€™s mind is a sign of intelligence. There have been someย heavy hitters in the investment space changing their tune on the merits of Bitcoinโ€ฆย

Ray Dalioย

Ray has been sounding the alarm on U.S. debt levels in recent years. He used to recommendย 1โ€“2% allocation to Bitcoin.ย Dalio now recommends up toย 15% in a mix of BTC and gold,ย citing serious concerns over U.S. fiscal policy and currencyย debasement.ย

Jamie Dimonย

Dimon,ย the respectedย CEO of J.P.ย Morgan Chase, has long called Bitcoinย aย โ€œfraud,” “pet rock,” and evenย compared BTCย toย theย tulip maniaย bubble of the 1600โ€™s.ย Behind the scenes,ย J.P.ย Morganย quietlyย facilitatedย Bitcoin exposure for clients through ETFs.ย

J.P. Morganย reportedly plansย to let clientsย borrow against Bitcoin holdings, a moveย industryย insiders believe could reshape BTC’s role in financeย and wealth managementย ย

Rick Edelmanย

Rick Edelman is the owner of one of the largest independentย investment advisors in the country.ย Rick has been a BTC champion for severalย years,ย some might even call him an early adopter.ย Recently, Rick caused a splash proclaiming investors shouldย allocateย anywhere from 10%-40% in Bitcoin.ย

Why Should Investors Care About Bitcoin?ย

In my opinion, itโ€™sย not going anywhere.ย

I also concede BTC is not for everyย investor,ย there are good reasons NOT to own Bitcoin as well (perhaps aย topic for a future post).ย Bitcoin is still volatile, and it is not for everyone. However, in my opinion, it should be included in the modern investment portfolio conversation.ย

However,ย Bitcoinโ€™s trajectory in 2025 is less about retail hype and moreย aboutย widespreadย adoption.ย BTCโ€™sย path intoย easily accessibleย ETFs, government balance sheets, and institutional portfolios suggests it is evolving into a core financial assetโ€”not just for speculative traders but for long-termย investors.ย

Iโ€™mย often askedย whatโ€™sย going to change in the next month, quarter, or year.ย In my opinion, thisย is the wrong question.ย A humble, savvy investor can potentially gain an advantage by asking whatโ€™s NOT going to change over the next 5-10 years.ย

Itโ€™sย not a stretch to proclaim countries are going to keep deficitย spendingย and paper currencies will continue to lose value.ย In that environment, itย could makeย sense to ownย assets thatย representย soundย moneyย principles.ย In my opinion,ย Bitcoinย could have a tailwind at its back for theย foreseeable future.ย
