Tis the Season for Wall Street Forecasting IX

Christmas music,ย Amazon packages,ย family gatherings,ย ugly sweaters,ย cocktail parties, represent the beautiful chaos ofย the holidays. It also means ourย 9th edition of โ€œTis the Season for Wall Street Forecastingโ€ series!ย

Itโ€™sย one of my favorite times of the year and the blog I look most forward to writing.ย

We cover how Wall Street did with their 2025ย S&P 500 price predictionsย (decent given their horrendousย track record) and what our confident friends are saying about 2026.ย

Letโ€™s see how Wall Streetโ€™s 2025ย forecastsย compared to whatย actuallyย happened.ย ย

These predictions were made in December 2024. ย ย

Aggregate Wall Street 2025 S&P 500 price target:ย 6,520ย

Actual S&P 500 index level (as of 12/9/25): 6,857ย

Wall Street only missed by ~5% in 2025. This is the bestย theyโ€™veย done over the past nine years (and itโ€™s not even close).ย ย This is coming off a dismal year in 2024; Wall Street missed by a whopping 26.3%! ย

Weย canโ€™tย give too much credit though; when you dig into the actual commentary on how 2025 would play out, they were wildly off. In short, they wereย accurateย in their end forecast, but wrong on how we got here.ย ย This is the equivalent of passing an exam by guessing โ€˜Cโ€™ on every question.ย ย

Ifย youโ€™reย keeping score at homeโ€ฆย

The mostย accurateย forecast came fromย DataTrekย Researchย with an S&P 500 price target ofย 6,840.ย

The most inaccurate forecastย (once again)ย came from BCAย Researchย with an S&P 500 price target ofย 4,450.ย

Hereโ€™sย whatย Wall Street is predicting for 2026 S&P 500 price levelsย (from most optimistic toย pessimistic)โ€ฆย

  • Oppenheimerย 8,100ย
  • Yardeni Research 8,000ย
  • Deutsche Bank 8,000ย
  • Morgan Stanley 7,800ย
  • UBS 7,600ย
  • Goldman Sachs 7,600ย
  • J.P. Morgan 7,500ย
  • Barclays 7,500ย
  • Center for Financial Research & Analysis (CFRA)ย 7,400ย
  • Societe Generale 7,300ย
  • Wells Fargoย 7,200ย
  • Bank of America 7,100ย
  • RBC 7,100ย
  • Ned Davis Research 7,100ย
  • Citi ~7,000ย

The above graph shows the S&P 500โ€™s priceย journey since 2024 (blue line) and various Wall Street estimates for 2026.ย Itโ€™sย a bit unsettling for Wall Street toย agreeย the journey in 2026 is going to be a smooth ride.ย ย

The simple average of the above forecasts for the S&P 500 price level for 2026ย isย 7,486, which equates to aย ~9%ย price return from current levels (not including dividends).ย

The most pessimistic forecast comes fromย Citi Groupย which calls for aย priceย return ofย ~2%ย for the S&P 500 inย 2026.ย

The most optimistic forecast comes fromย Oppenheimerย which calls for a return of 18% for the S&P 500 in 2026.ย

Most everyย Wall Streetย firmย predictsย double digit S&P 500 price appreciation in 2026.ย To quote the great investor Bob Farrell, โ€œWhen everyone agrees, something else happens.โ€ย

The experts areย essentially shruggingย off nosebleed valuations and assume the AI narrativeย remainsย intact for at least another year.ย They could be right, but suchย groupthinkย is a bit too neat andย tidy in our opinion.ย ย

Whatโ€™sย the big issue with forecasting?ย

A few things come to mindโ€ฆย

  1. Thereโ€™sย no penalty for being wrong.ย Banks, analysts, and theย guy on financial TikTok can say whatever they want. If by chance they are correct, they are lauded as anย oracle,ย and investors will hangย onย theirย every word.ย ย Never mind that most are perpetually wrong year after year.ย ย
  2. Absurd, wild forecasts get the most attention. In the digital age, everyone has a microphone. People are competing for opens, clicks, and attention to monetize their content across the internet. This incentivizes outlandish forecasts that are great for generating attention but arenโ€™t actionable investment guidance.ย ย
  3. Investors that find forecasts credible are relying on a framework thatย has proven not to work.ย If you find yourself making predictions or seeking them out,ย itโ€™sย only a matter of time before you make a catastrophic mistake.ย ย ย

My advice is not to ignore Wall Street forecasts, market research, or commentary. Rather, take it with a grain of salt. Think of it as entertainment or an intellectually stimulating exercise. If a financialย advisorย tells you what happens nextย or positions your investments based on predictions,ย run the other way.ย

In our opinion, investors that know what to pay attention to in the digital age have a huge advantage.ย
